Construction begins on Sheboygan's Gartman Subdivision
The $3.3 million project will last several months

SHEBOYGAN — Work has begun on improving land that will become the Gartman Subdivision on the city’s far south side.
The construction work marks the first step in improving land for the future subdivision. The first phase of the improvements involves preparing the land for future roadway and utility construction. The work taking place this year includes excavation and the construction of two stormwater ponds. Clay soil from the city-owned Butzen Sports Complex on South Business Drive will be relocated to the site.

Mashuda Contractors of Green Lake County was awarded the $3.3 million project. The company submitted the lowest bid while Sheboygan-based Buteyn-Peterson Construction Company submitted the highest bid at $4,455,612. Work is expected to be completed early next year. Later this year, city officials will seek bids for the second phase that will include roadway and utility construction.
The Gartman Subdivision is on 195 acres of farmland the City of Sheboygan acquired from the Gartman Family for $3.6 million in 2022. In the past, Mayor Ryan Sorenson said he hopes to bring low-income housing to the area.1 According to documents filed with the city, the subdivision could have as many as 11 separate apartment buildings, each with 63-units. Reedsburg-based Pelton Builders has received a developer incentive to construct multi-family housing there.
