Construction underway at Sheboygan's Butzen Sports Complex
Two projects are occurring simultaneously at the south side complex

SHEBOYGAN — Construction activity at the Butzen Sports Complex on Sheboygan’s south side is serving two purposes.
For much of the summer, dump trucks have been hauling dirt from the city-owned sports complex near South Business Drive and Camelot Boulevard. The dirt is being transported two miles south to the planned Gartman Subdivision on Moenning Road. According to Mayor Ryan Sorenson, the 195-acre development between Riverdale Avenue and Creekview Court will feature affordable apartments.

The work taking place this summer includes excavation and the construction of two stormwater ponds. Mashuda Contractors of Green Lake County was awarded the $3.3 million project. The company submitted the lowest bid while Sheboygan-based Buteyn-Peterson Construction Company submitted the highest bid at $4,455,612. The farmland was purchased by the city from the Gartman Family for $3.6 million in 2022.

In the past, Mayor Sorenson said he hopes to bring low-income housing to the area. According to documents filed with the city, the subdivision could have as many as 11 separate apartment buildings, each with 63-units. Reedsburg-based Pelton Builders has received a developer incentive to construct multi-family housing there.

Last week, Wagner Excavating began excavating and leveling out the ground for a temporary gravel driveway and parking lot at the 52.84-acre Butzen Sports Complex. The land was donated by Carol Butzen after her death in March 2014 with the condition that it be used for recreational purposes. The land was annexed by the city in 1988 from the Town of Wilson. Lakeshore United FC has been working with the city to develop the land into soccer fields.
