City or Town: Washington Avenue is crumbling, who is responsible?
Part of Washington Avenue staddles the City and Town of Sheboygan limits

TOWN OF SHEBOYGAN — A particular section of Washington Avenue in Sheboygan is creating unsafe conditions for drivers and bicyclists.
The eastbound lane of Washington Avenue from South Business Drive in the Town of Sheboygan is crumbling. Drivers are all too familiar with the potholes as they drive past the radio stations and Lakeshore Display. The potholes have led to a section of road being essentially washed away.
Approximately 0.25 miles of Washington Avenue staddles the City and Town of Sheboygan limits. But, neither are eager to make repairs to the thoroughfare. The section was last repaved in both directions in 2013. The city last resurfaced Washington Avenue between Lakeshore Drive and South 18th Street in 2018.

WKTS News reached out to officials with the city and town to see which government is responsible for maintaining the street. “Yes, that part is Town of Sheboygan," said Tod Holfeltz, Deputy Director of Public Works for the Town of Sheboygan. “I believe the section of Washington Avenue from the intersection of South Business Drive east to South 18th Street is a Town of Sheboygan road,” said Travis Peterson, the city’s DPW Director.
According to Town Chairman Dan Hein, the potholes will be patched once the Sheboygan County Highway Department opens up the blacktop plant for the season.
There are eight Town of Sheboygan properties and three Town of Wilson properties accessible from Washington Avenue. While you can’t see it, you may smell it. The Zimbal Mink Ranch is one of the three Town of Wilson properties. One clue the properties are not in the city are the bright blue address plaques.
