Sheboygan's Uptown Social draw hundreds daily, former Senior Center to be demolished
The City of Sheboygan purchased the Save-A-Lot store for $1 million in 2020

SHEBOYGAN — Uptown Social is celebrating 2,000 members since opening in November 2022 in the renovated 30,000-square-foot former Save-A-Lot store.
Located at 1817 North 8th Street in the Historic Grant Neighborhood, the City of Sheboygan owned and operated Uptown Social provides a wide range of programs based on fitness, recreation, creativity and travel. Membership is open to all ages, with programming geared toward adults 55 and older.
With an average daily attendance of 250 in 2025, Uptown Social has far exceeded the membership totals of its predecessor, the former Senior Activity Center located in the Ellis Historical District, which reached about 700 members at its peak prior to closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The building at North 5th Street and Wisconsin Avenue will be demolished in the coming months to make way for development.

“This milestone reflects just how deeply our community values connection, wellness and creativity,” said Emily Rendall-Araujo, the city’s Director of Senior Services. “In less than three years, Uptown Social has grown into a vibrant resource where people come not only to socialize, but to learn, exercise and age positively.”
Since late 2024, Uptown Social’s new gymnasium and exercise room have been heavily utilized for a wide variety of activities, including expanded fitness classes, indoor pickleball, monthly movie showings, public meetings and special events. The Friends of Uptown Social, a non-profit organization, played a key role in funding and supporting the gymnasium, which has become a cornerstone of the center’s programming.
Membership is $40 for City and Town of Sheboygan residents and $45 for those from other communities. Participants may have their membership and fitness class fees waived depending on insurance coverage.
