South 18th Street gets half a million dollars in improvements
According to City Engineer Kevin Jump, the pavement rating is 3 out of 10

SHEBOYGAN — A section of South 18th Street is getting what the City of Sheboygan is calling “improvements” while not receiving a complete resurfacing.
According to City Engineer Kevin Jump, the pavement rating on South 18th Street between Washington Avenue and Mead Avenue is 3 out of 10. The street was constructed between 1968 and 1970. Despite the rating, Caledonia-based Cornerstone Pavers was awarded the $528,321.20 contract to do spot concrete repairs.

As part of the contract, the city is paying $4,500 for traffic cones and barricades as well as $1,400 for two digital message boards. The city is paying $50 per day for 28 days. As of Tuesday evening, those digital message boards are turned off and not being used but the city is paying for their use. WKTS News has learned the city’s Department of Public Works has no shortage of barricades.
In 2023, the city had plans to repave the street with asphalt overlay. But instead of reconstructing or asphalting, Jump decided to have certain damaged portions of the street cut out and filled with concrete. After the half a million dollar contract was awarded earlier this year, he then requested to reallocate $471,103.22 in unused street improvement funds to pay for street lights along Weeden Creek Road. The Common Council approved Jump’s request in June.
Earlier this year, Wisconsin Public Service and Miller Pipeline upgraded natural gas pipes along South 18th Street. Since wrapping up work, they have now shifted their efforts to Lakeshore Drive in the Roosevelt Park Neighborhood.
