Sheboygan's Lakefront turns into a drag strip
City of Sheboygan considering a number of options to address reckless driving

SHEBOYGAN — Changes are under consideration to combat reckless driving and other illicit activities along Sheboygan’s lakefront.
The parking lot of the Harbor Centre Marina by Deland Park has become the center of attention at night for some drivers. Vehicles and motorcycles have been caught on video speeding through the parking lot. There have been multiple instances of reckless drivers nearly striking pedestrians and other vehicles in the parking lot. Residents who live across the street report hearing revving engines, tire squealing, car horns, and youth yelling. One resident who lives south of the YMCA says it has become a Carnival-like atmosphere.
The Sheboygan Police Department has increased patrols in the parking lot and along Broughton Drive where drivers continue their reckless behavior. Last week, temporary speed bumps were installed in the parking lot to counter the behavior that has been an ongoing problem since last year. Additional measures are under review by city officials and include security cameras, license plate readers, gates and stricter enforcement of parking regulations. When asked what the police department has been doing to address reckless driving along the lakefront, Captain Joel Kuszynski refused to respond.
3rd District Alderman Michael Close also did not respond when WKTS News asked what the city was doing to combat the problem. The lakefront is within his aldermanic district. "I do know the city is aware of the late night shenanigans from bikers and cars, and they are working internally to find a solution to this ongoing issue," said Nick Warminsky, the city’s Marina Manager.

Vehicles have been observed speeding and passing other vehicles on Broughton Drive. One driver was observed yelling racial slurs out his window before driving west on Washington Court on Tuesday, June 17th. That is a one-way street for eastbound traffic. Vehicles have also been observed speeding up, and not slowing down, for the speed hump in front of the YMCA.
A male driver operating a blue KIA has also been observed speeding up and down Broughton Drive. During what appeared to be a road rage incident, the driver is heard yelling profanities out the window while following another vehicle closely. The same vehicle has been caught on video speeding through the Harbor Centre Marina parking lot before speeding north on Broughton Drive.
