Habitat for Humanity announces new program to assist senior citizens
Aging in Place offers affordable home modifications in Sheboygan County
SHEBOYGAN — Habitat for Humanity Lakeside’s new Aging in Place program is designed to help the area’s older adults stay in their homes for as long as possible.
Aging in Place, launching this month, offers affordable home modifications, including railings and ramps, raised toilet seats, grab bars, lighting improvements, secure locks, and lever-style door handles and faucets. “Small fixes like these can make the difference between getting to stay in one’s home and having to move elsewhere,” said Lisa Bertagnoli, the organization’s Communications Manager. Nearly 80 percent of American adults would prefer to stay in their homes as they age, according to an AARP survey.
Sheboygan County residents who are 62 or older, own and occupy their own home in the county, have valid homeowner insurance, are current on property taxes, and meet these income guidelines are encouraged to apply for Aging in Place home repairs. For those living alone, the maximum annual income is $46,480. For a household of two, the maximum income is $53,130 annually.
The cost of the home repairs depends on the scope of the project. Affordable financing will be available. To learn more about the program, call Family Services Manager Penny Rayfield at (920) 458-3399 or visit habitatlakeside.com.
