New Jersey Avenue to be narrowed and repaved for $1.3 million trail
Both projects will be completed simultaneously to minimize disruption

SHEBOYGAN — A new trail will be constructed on Sheboygan’s west side.
With federal matching funds, the City of Sheboygan plans to construct a fully separated recreational trail on New Jersey Avenue between Kiwanis Park and the Taylor Drive Beltline. Despite the street already having sidewalks, City Engineer Kevin Jump said this would be a new pedestrian path linking the Taylor Drive Beltline Trail to the recently completed Kiwanis Park Trail along the river. The corridor will also be equipped with trail lighting matching the fixtures used on other trails.

Last year, city officials applied for the federal Carbon Reduction Grant and in April, the city was awarded $1,086,199. The city will be required to provide a 20% match, $271,549.80, bringing the total project budget to $1,357,749. Repaving of the street and construction of the trail would occur at the same time and is planned for 2027.
New Jersey Avenue was constructed with concrete between 1965 and 1987. Portions of the street east of the Sheboygan River received asphalt overlay in 1997, 2006 and most recently as last year.
Wildwood Industrial Park
Today’s Wildwood Neighborhood was known as Lyman Flats. In 1940, the City of Sheboygan annexed 290-acres of land from the Town of Sheboygan. It was not until 1961 when the city began efforts to improve the area and purchased 29-acres for what would become the Wildwood Industrial Park.

In 1966, the Municipal Service Building was constructed at a cost of $1.2 million. The city’s Department of Public Works is headquartered out of the building. When it first opened, the garage was large enough to store 115 trucks.
