$1.5 million awarded for affordable housing project in Manitowoc
Demolition of the Mirro factory began in 2013 and was completed in 2018

MANITOWOC — With work scheduled to begin this summer on the cleanup of the former Mirro factory, the future of the site is coming into focus.
The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) announced on Friday that the Maritime Flats project will receive $975,873 in federal credits and $541,332 in state credits, for a total of $1,517,205. According to Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels, this is the final step in making this project a reality. Last year, the city was awarded nearly $2 million in a federal grant through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act for the final cleanup. That project was awarded, and work began in March with the removal of several underground tanks.

The remainder of the cleanup will start up again this summer funded by a $1.9 million grant from the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Crews will work to remove the remaining contaminated soils and demolishing the remaining concrete building slab according to Nickels. The work will allow for the construction of the apartments. “The need for affordable housing continues to be one of the issues I hear most about as I travel across our state,” said Governor Tony Evers. “Having reliable, affordable housing affects our workforce, our economy, our kids in school, and a family’s ability to get ahead.”
Demolition of the plant began in 2013 and was completed in 2018. According to Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan (LSS), the Maritime Flats will be a 59-unit multi-family complex. Groundbreaking could take place as soon as later this year or early next year.
