Aurora Health shutting down Sheboygan's Behavioral Health Unit
The psychiatric unit has been known as Ground Kohler dating back to 1970

KOHLER — Aurora Health has decided to shut down their inpatient Behavioral Health Unit at Sheboygan’s Aurora Medical Center.
The hospital, located at South Taylor Drive and Union Avenue in Kohler, has experienced consistently high demand for medical surgical inpatient beds, with occupancy rates nearing 100%. Beginning on September 19th, the inpatient Behavioral Health Unit will be repurposed to create additional inpatient medical surgical bed capacity. This decision follows a 67% decrease in behavioral health inpatients at the Aurora Medical Center, with a corresponding increase in outpatient behavioral health services. Outpatient behavioral health services will continue to be offered locally in Sheboygan and the surrounding communities.
“We remain committed to supporting the comprehensive behavioral health needs of the Sheboygan community,” said a spokesperson for Aurora. “Our plan to create additional medical surgical beds reflects our ongoing commitment to aligning resources with community needs and ensuring access to the right care, in the right setting, at the right time.”
The Behavioral Health Unit opened inside the hospital in 2022. The psychiatric unit has been known as Ground Kohler dating back to 1970 when it was located at Memorial Hospital at North 7th Street and North Avenue. It was also referred to as 1-K. Inpatient behavioral health services will transition to Aurora Psychiatric Hospital in Wauwatosa, where patients can continue to receive specialized care.
Aurora Health leases the 55.28-acre property from the Kohler Company.
